What is stout beer?

Stout beer comes from England and actually originated from Porter beers. Porter was a popular drink among the porters in the harbour. After a hard day's work, they relaxed with a Porter beer in hand. Porters were the men who carried luggage for travelers. The English word for porter is Porter, now you can guess why this beer was called Porter. 😊

Because this was such a popular beer, many brewers also started brewing it, each in their own way. This resulted in many different types of Porter beer. So many that a new beer style was needed to tell all these beers apart. This is how the Stout Porter was born, this term was a designation for the stronger variants of the Porter beers. Stout is the English definition for powerful or strong, later this name was corrupted to just “Stout.”

Types of stout beer

There used to be a significant difference between a Porter and Stout beer. This difference has now faded considerably. For example, Porter beers used to be lighter in color and had a reddish glow, while the Stout was jet black and opaque. Nowadays, Porters are often also the color of a Stout. A stout beer was originally also stronger than Porter. Nowadays this does not have to be the case, there are also Porters with an alcohol percentage of a stout.

As with most beer styles, there are also many sub-styles for Stout beer. For example the Russian Imperial Stout or the Milk Stout.
