Quadrupel

Single, double, triple… the well-known list. La Trappe added the Quadrupel to this in 1991. The term fits nicely into the series, but what kind of specialty beer is this and where does this beer style come from? Come, let's enter the world of Quadrupel beer. I will also recommend my favorite Quadrupel beers, so that you have plenty to taste at your next home drinks.

What is Quadrupel beer?

Unlike most beer types, this is a relatively new beer type, it has only been around since 1991. La Trappe Quadrupel introduced this new beer style and has since been seen as the style icon of Quadrupel. But this does not mean that Quadrupel is a Dutch beer style. This type of beer had already been drunk in other countries, but La Trappe was the first to give its strongest beer this name. The term falls nicely into the well-known list of single, double and triple. Best Quadrupel beer, st. Bernard Abbot 12

It is therefore not clear what exactly the origin of this beer type is. We do know that this beer style is very popular!

The high alcohol percentage makes it a perfect winter beer. But enthusiasts cannot do without this beer during the other seasons, so it is now drunk all year round.

Quadrupel is an example of a tasting beer. So sit back and relax when you pour a quadrupel into your glass. So really enjoy it!

Taste of quadrupel

A quadrupel has a predominantly sweet taste. The bitterness in the beer is well compensated by the residual sugars. You often taste flavors such as roasted malt, caramel and dried fruit. There can also be a spiciness in a quadrupel. The alcohol percentage is between 8,5 and 10%, which provides a nice alcohol warmth to the beer. The color of a quadrupel varies from copper to a deep brown color, the beer is quite clear.

Barrel aged

Barrel aging is common at Quadrupel. The beers mature in a wooden barrel that previously contained another drink. During maturation, the beer takes on the flavors of the drink that was in the barrel. You can also taste the flavors from the wood through this barrel maturation. These flavors give an extra taste sensation to the beer.

Fancy a quadruple beer?

In the beer package quadruple I have put together 8 beautiful Belgian quadrupel beers. What do you think is the best Quadrupel beer? I will also recommend some of my favorite quadrupel beers.

  • Bernard Abbot 12: This is a beer with the original Westvleteren recipe. Soft, full-bodied taste and perfect balance between bitter and sweet.
  • Golden dragon 9000: 9000 is the postal code of Ghent, the city where the first Gulden Draak 9000 was poured
  • Guy Rye High: This beer is brewed with a lot of rye malt and candy sugar, which gives the beer a full and slightly sweet taste.

Cheers!
