Beer package with Belgian Trappists

What are the Belgian Trappist beers?

April 23, 2024 0 By BCB

Trappist beer is a term that sounds familiar to many people, both beer lovers and non-beer lovers. They are extremely popular and have fans from all over the world. However, the number of Trappist beers is scarce and seems to be decreasing. This is because a specialty beer cannot simply bear the name Trappist, strict rules must be met. These rules are well protected and enforced by the International Trappist Association.

If the rules are met, the beer may carry the ATP logo. Authentic Trappist LogoThis Authentic Trappist Product logo shows that the beer is officially a Trappist beer. When is a beer a Trappist? A beer may bear the Trappist logo if it meets the following rules:

  1. The beer must be brewed within the walls of a monastery.
  2. The beer must be brewed under the supervision of the monks at all times.
  3. The proceeds from the beer are intended for the maintenance of the monks and the abbey. If there are any profits left over, they should be donated to charities

Fortunately, in Belgium we can proudly say that we are the homeland for the largest number of Trappists. No fewer than 5 of the 10 recognized Trappist beers are brewed in Belgium.
